- Don’t send money to online strangers. The jury’s out on whether Washington DC is good for singles. It was recently ranked as the best city in the United States for dating in a study by Apartment List, but the internet is rife with reports that it’s the exact opposite.
Many locals claim that the abundance of political workers upset the overall vibe of the city.
“These individuals tend to not fit into the open culture in DC,” says dating blogger Matt Seymour. “There are so many of them that you are bound to accidentally end up on a date with one.”
Another common complaint is the lack of eligible men in the area. Census data suggests there’s 100 women for 90 men in the District of Columbia. But, worse still for the fairer sex, there are 49% more young college-educated women than men.
This surely contributes to Washington DC having the highest percentage of single-person households in the United States. The women are simply unwilling to date down.
Of course, if you do meet the standard, you can have a lot of fun here, as there’s barely any competition - and the rumor that Washington DC is stuck-up and boring is precisely that; a rumor.
“DC may have garnered a reputation for being a buttoned-up town where it’s tough to find a partner without talking politics, but that couldn’t be further from the truth,” says local journalist Austa Somvichian-Clausen. “Our city is actually a great backdrop to find a potential partner.”
Does Washington DC have a hook-up culture?
Any U.S city with a severe shortage of eligible men will develop a hook-up culture (for those deemed hot enough to access it). Washington DC is no exception.
In a survey of DC-based female interns, 30% revealed that they had hooked up with someone within the first month of living there while 24% said they were dating more than one person.

Ash Wright
Ash Wright is a dating coach for Beyond Ages focused on helping men completely turn their lives and dating prospects around. He was once a World of Warcraft addict who hated leaving the house, a lot has changed since then. After watching the steady success of others, hitting the gym for some added self-confidence and forcing himself to get out there to trial things for himself, life has never been better. After many years of barely leaving the house, he embarked on a self-improvement journey that eventually led to tremendous success with women. He now teaches many of the skills he learned first-hand to other men in similar positions.
Ash has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Calgary and incorporates many of the psychological principles he’s learned into what he teaches his students.
